The DEFEP project marked a significant milestone with its two-year coordination meeting, held at Moldova State University from December 5 to 7, 2024. This hybrid event brought together over 50 representatives from partner institutions in Ukraine, Moldova, and the European Union. Participants included academics, project managers, and stakeholders from consortium universities such as Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University, Universität des Saarlandes, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Università degli Studi di Palermo, Universitatea de Stat din Moldova, Universitatea Tehnica a Moldovei, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Chernihiv Polytechnic National University, Uman National University of Horticulture, Lviv National Environmental University and Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman.

The meeting opened with a warm welcome from the hosts, including a keynote address by the project coordinator, Olena Filimonova, who emphasized the transformative potential of distance education in the region. She commended the collaborative efforts of all partner institutions and set the tone for the discussions ahead.

Over the course of the three days, participants reviewed the progress made during the first half of the project, focusing on achievements, challenges, and strategies for future implementation. The agenda included in-depth sessions on various work packages, such as the development of distance education curriculums, the performance of experimental laboratories, and the effectiveness of the e-learning platform. Representatives from each partner university presented updates on their contributions, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the project’s impact across different regions.

One of the highlights was the discussion on quality assurance and accreditation processes for distance education programs in Moldova and Ukraine. These sessions were led by Natalia Ivanova, head of the Quality and Ethics Committee, who outlined the steps taken to establish robust internal and external monitoring systems. Other key topics included strategies for engaging stakeholders such as local governments, NGOs, and businesses to support the implementation and promotion of distance education.

The meeting also emphasized collaboration and innovation, with discussions on creating joint courses and enhancing mobility opportunities among partner institutions. The proposal to establish an Association of Distance Learning Institutions, a pivotal initiative for ensuring the project’s sustainability, garnered widespread support.

In addition to formal sessions, participants had the opportunity to engage in team-building activities, including a cultural tour of Chisinau, which highlighted the city’s rich history and traditions. Informal networking during meals and social events further strengthened the bonds between the project’s international partners.

As the event concluded, the DEFEP team, energized by the shared vision and commitment of all participants, outlined a clear roadmap for the next stages of the project. With its diverse and dedicated consortium, the DEFEP project is well-positioned to continue transforming distance education in the region, making it more accessible, inclusive, and impactful.
